Annual Golf Day
THE 2007 TUFC MASTERS
Well well, what a morning....or day more like it. A chilli start to the day prevented a big turnout at the annual TUFC Masters, however the guys who did play enjoyed a warm winters afternoon of golf.
This year, the absence of club stalwarts (due to their trekking through Asia) Gordo, Jozo and Macca meant that the fluro uniforms, wigs, suspenders etc werent present, however the amber liquid was attending thanks to the ever faithful Junior Colbs.
The 4 groups set off at 11 and it was widely tipped to be a day for the big guns in group 4. Neil Leech, the 2006 champion, Tyson Littlewood and Steve from a Tuggies divisional team made up the group.
As time passed and groups crossed each other on fairways - largely due to the closeness of the fairways and not due to balls skipping from one fairway to the next - a dark horse was emerging as a possible TUFC Master. It was the small but big club man Steve Beattie who was plying in group 1. Rumours had been whispered that after 9 holes he was something like 9 over, which sent shivvers through the big hitters in group 4. Again time progressed and as the pressure built profanities echoed through the course. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was the balls regularly finding the little water that was on the course but nonetheless in true Tuggies spirits, voices were heard.
Putting on the 18th, we saw Steve Beattie walking back to the car and he called a score of 94. Finishing as group 3 we putted and moved to the club house. After discussing scores, big drives, hangovers and bad putts we found that Beattie was ahead. In comes group 4 minutes later. The questions were out, did anyone beat 94? Leech strolled in first and with a shake of the head, Beattie only had 2 to beat. Steve was next and he made the call of 94. We had a tie, or did we........then Tyson coming into the clubhouse last was asked, 94?.......Words weren't needed, the rye smile and a clenched fist said it all. We had a new champion - and a new person to wear the coveted Green Jacket (proudly sponsored by St Vinnies) at Presentation night.
Scores under 100 were: 93 Littlewood, 94 Steve, 94 Beattie, 98 Leech, 98 Conlon, 99 Dickens. Everyone else scored 101 apparently.
Other performances worth noting were 'Slowest player of the day' winner George Claveria, his 9 practice swings before each shot earning him this accolade. Brett Dickens won biggest drive, cannoning his Titleist some 600 metres on the fly and Matty Colbran who definitely got the best value for his money striking the ball no less then 120 times.
On a final note, the players would like the hundreds of supporters that followed them around the course. The fact that they were kangaroos didn't stop the showboating and Happy Gilmore style entertainment.
History of the Event
The TUFC Masters' has been running for the past 5yrs. In the beginning the 'Masters' was been held the day after presentation night at a local Pitch and Putt course, but in more recent years we have extended the competition to a full round of 18 holes golf, which is generally played at the Duntroon 'Fairburn' course.
In addition to owning the coveted TUFC Green Masters jacket for 1 full year, the winner has his/her name engraved on the trophy/shield. The winner must wear the jacket to the following presentation night.
