The Origins of the Tuggeranong United Football Club Cricket Club
In February 2007, not long after the prestigious Boxing Day cricket match at Jerrabomberra Tennis nets, Jeremy Butler had a premonition. He had noticed that football players were quite multi-skilled and envisaged that these skills could be put to further use. He immediately suggested that we get a few committed lads down to the local cricket nets to help pass the time away, leading up to the new football season. After a number of sessions it was decided that the Football Club would venture into the City Suburban Canberra Cricket Association competition. A new era was about to unfold.
Numerous nets sessions were held not only during that summer but all throughout the year in the hope that we might be fully prepared to enter the competition without disgracing ourselves. Players purchased equipment that would usually only be reserved for the elite and word got around that the players were in fact quite serious! So serious that a name was suggested and the Tuggeranong United Football Club Cricket Club (TUFC CC) was born.
Immediately upon creation, interest was received from a couple of well established clubs to form mergers ... options that have been shelved at least until the end of the first season. During this period Danny Parker, Jeremy Butler and Steve Diggle took up executive positions as President, Vice President and Treasurer, respectively. The positions of Captain and Vice-Captain were easy decisions as both Steve Diggle and Grant Butler could rely on past experiences.
The TUFC CC didn't have it all their own way as their initial application was rejected, on the basis of insufficient maintained grounds within the region. After further deliberation the Association accepted our nomination and the first ever TUFC CC team were rightfully placed in the 5th Grade. The TUFC CC was allocated, as its home ground, Wanniassa, an apt choice as the ground is also the training ground for the Premier League football team.
The TUFC CC would not exist without the commitment of players and the following "Originals" stepped up to receive their "Baggies" for the inaugural year: Jeremy Butler (1), Steve Diggle (2), Danny Parker (3), Grant Butler (4), Brett Dickens (5), Ian Diggle (6), David Horsfall (7), John Warner (8), Brian McDonald (9), Jason Rayner (10), Andrew Diggle (11), Pat McCann (12) and Andrew Parker (13).
