Massive GF weekend for TUFC teams

Tuggeranong has two State League teams in this weekend's grand finals after Api Pou's Division Six side upset hot favourites Canberra City at the University of Canberra on Saturday.

Tuggeranong's hard-fought 2-0 win earned it a grand final showdown with ANU this Saturday. Division 9 also faces ANU in its grand final on the same day.

Canberra City, undefeated until the last round of the regular season, hit poor form when it mattered most, losing its last three matches to crash out of the finals series in straight sets.

Tuggeranong, meanwhile, deserved a grand final berth, holding out City with solid defending and capitalising at the other end with a goal in each half.

The first came courtesy of a Canberra City own goal, after a Tuggeranong cross was deflected into City's net by one of its own players.

The second came when Bryn Griffith latched on to a loose ball outside the 18-yard box and somehow struck a low shot through a maze of players to beat the keeper, who didn't move a muscle.

In between, Tuggeranong dominated general play, with City relying too heavily on its one and only weapon - the bloke with the enormous "throw".

Once this predictable tactic was sussed out by Tuggeranong, City was rarely in the contest and, apart from a 10-minute period after half-time, gave Tuggeranong goal-keeper John Warner few problems.

Tuggeranong's State League Six side plays ANU at O'Conner Enclosed Oval at 12.30pm on Saturday. State League 9 plays ANU at the same venue at 2.30pm.
