UNITED DEFEAT WODEN VALLEY

First half goals from Mark Shields and Luke Fattore were enough for Tuggeranong United to notch up a 2-1 win over fellow ACT Premier League newcomers Woden Valley in a competitive pre-season friendly at Kambah on Saturday.

Hot on the heels of a 1-1 draw at Belconnen United in their first run out of the new season Tuggeranong were quickly into their stride and were comfortably ahead 2-0 inside the first twenty minutes. A lapse in concentration allowed Woden Valley a swift response but United were rarely in danger thereafter and easily held on to claim the win.

Indeed, but from some profligate finishing from the Tuggeranong attackers the score line would have been much higher in favour of the home team as several presentable chances went begging.

Scott Conlon, United's head coach was reasonably happy with the result, if not the performance. "The second half was a little lackadaisical from our point of view," he said afterwards. "We had lots of opportunities to put the game to bed and will need to be more ruthless in front of goal when the real action kicks off. In saying that though there were some excellent passages of play and we looked fairly fit and strong for sustained periods of the game."

Elsewhere there was disappointment for the club's feeder teams. The Premier Pathway League side, under the tutelage of Steve Emmott slumped to a 0-5 home reverse to Woden Valley, whilst Gordon MacDonald's under-18 Premier League side, despite a much improved showing from last week's encounter with Belconnen, were beaten 0-2 by their Woden Valley opposites.
